Spiritual Direction

Who is Spiritual Direction For?
Anyone seeking to grow in a deeper, more attentive relationship with God can benefit from spiritual direction. It is for those who desire a richer prayer life and greater clarity in discernment; for those who feel stuck or are experiencing dryness in their spiritual journey; and for those who long for a safe space to explore their struggles, questions, and doubts in the presence of God.
What Spiritual Direction IS
What Spiritual
Direction
IS NOT
01
A tool for formation...
Spiritual Formation…is the ongoing process of the triune God transforming the believer’s life and character toward the life and character of Jesus Christ – accomplished by the Holy Spirit in the context of Biblical community. - Paul Pettit
03
An historical practice...
The first spiritual directors were the desert fathers of the third and fourth centuries and the ministry has been practiced in Christian communities ever since. The practice has made a comeback of sorts amongst protestants and evangelicals beginning in the 1960s.
02
A sacred space...
Deep listening and reflection help us respond to God’s invitations, grow in awareness of God’s activity in our lives and His love for us, and integrate our faith into the daily aspects of our lives - orienting our whole selves in relation to Christ.
01
Like other care...
It's not mentoring, discipleship, or therapy. Mentoring is about sharing skills or knowledge; discipleship is helping others grow in their knowledge of God’s Word and how to apply it to daily life; and therapy treats crises or mental health issues.
03
An intellectual exercise...
Rather, it's about moving what we know in our heads down to what we really believe about God and how we experience Him in our souls. This can lead to deep healing and a transformed life as we learn to walk closely with Jesus in all the mundane aspects of daily life.
02
A quick fix...
It's slower than we'd like! Spiritual direction is not about fixing problems but about deepening the relationship with God. We move at His pace and in His timing, hopefully finding more peace and authenticity with Him and within ourselves along the way.
What is a session like?
Spiritual direction sessions are typically one hour in length and held on a monthly basis, creating a consistent rhythm for reflection and growth. During each session, the director listens attentively—not only to the directee, but also to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and the movements within themselves. Through thoughtful questions and gentle reflection, the director helps the directee discern how God may be speaking or working in their life. Moments of silence are intentionally woven throughout the time together, offering space to quiet the mind and body and become more aware of God’s presence. Rooted in a ministry of slowing down and paying attention, each session also includes opportunities to pause and pray, whether aloud or in silence.
What does a session cost?
I currently do not charge a fee for spiritual direction sessions. I have been heavily influenced by generosity models outlined by Generous Giving and Iona House.
